Does IVF is an efficient infertility treatment?

IVF is one of the highly recommended assisted reproductive technology to solve the multiple males and female infertility conditions. The success rate of IVF treatment is measured by the live birth rate of the newborn resultant from per IVF cycle. The success of IVF treatment depends upon various factors. However, women in their reproductive age have an average of 20% to 35% chance of getting pregnant per cycle. This outcome can be better for women at a younger age. The age and cause of infertility can matter in case of an IVF success rate.

IVF treatment is efficient or not

Facts of IVF efficiency

In 1978, Louise Brown, the first baby was successfully born through IVF technology. From then the IVF cycle is continuing its journey in reproductive treatment and since then more than 190,000 live births have taken place and many more in their way. But there indeed is no assurance of guaranteed live birth will occur from every IVF cycle even after most promising and healthiest embryo selected for transfer to a healthy uterus.

Every woman has unique reproductive functioning. Therefore, in certain cases IVF procedure can be time-consuming because of additional invasive procedures require to pursue the treatment. This relatively increases the financial expenditure also.

In IVF another considerable factor is the number of embryos selected for transfer. In the case of more than one embryos transferred to the recipient's uterus, then the scope of multiple pregnancies increased.

It has found that almost 33% of the success rate can be achieved per embryo transferred in women under 35 years of age. This success rate might increase with multiple embryo transfer. But this may increase the risk of multiple pregnancies.  In certain cases, the continuation of a series of cycles with frozen embryo selected for transfer from the first cycle provides a 90% success rate in conceiving for healthy women who have not to develop any other gynecological problem within them during their IVF treatment.

Briefing of IVF treatment

Before starting the procedure, a thorough consultation with an IVF expert is conducted for providing the understanding of the detailed procedure along with potential associated risks with this procedure. IVF expert can also explain why IVF is the best possible option for your condition so that you and your partner feel confident to opt for this treatment measure for building your family.

In IVF treatment, the egg can be collected from the intended mother, and subsequently sperm is collected from the intended father. But in case of anyone partner of the couple, or both the partners has/have a fertility issue, then known or anonymous egg or/and sperm donor can be recruited. In certain cases, known or anonymous embryo donation also applied in IVF treatment. In certain cases, a gestational carrier - additional assistance requires to support the family building, which is also known as gestational surrogacy. In this case, a woman is legally recruited as a gestation surrogate and the created embryo is implanted in her womb for growth and delivery of the fetus.

Study reference

A study result obtains from a trial in the USA reported that the IVF success rate broadly dependent on the age factor. This study result found 40% success rate per cycle for women under 35, which is markedly decreased to 22 %  in females between the age of  38 and 40 years and a sharp reduction of only 12 % occurs in women with an age between 41 and 42.  This study result indicates with increasing age the risk of miscarriage is higher even after women conceiving through the IVF cycle.

Considerable factors influence the success rate of IVF treatment

Experts also demonstrated that in the case of using donor egg in the IVF treatment, the success rate primarily depends upon the donor age, rather the age of the recipient. Apart from this, certain other factors also interfere with the effectiveness of the IVF, which include stress, over or underweight, smoking, and consumption of alcohol. Obesity is one of the big hindrances to become pregnant even after IVF treatment. BMI (body mass index) greater than twenty will reduce the one-third chance of conceiving, and a similar effect can obtain with regular smoking habit.

The efficacy of the IVF treatment also depends upon the clinic's facility, infrastructure including the expertise of the IVF clinician. Different clinics publish their success story by highlighting different angels like the availability of different forms of treatment or considering different age groups.

In the end, the reality is IVF treatment does not provide assured results. The outcome depends upon nature as similar to natural conception.
